A (hopefully) fun once-in-a-while thing. I like lyrics but I can almost never remember the whole damn song. So these are snippets of songs that I like that stick in my head or I’m likely to throw out randomly in conversation as if they just came to me. First post of this sort here.
I was born with a plastic spoon in my mouth
The north side of my town faced east, and the east was facing south
—“Substitute,” The Who
And he came to a door
And he looked inside
Father I want to kill you
Mother I want to…
—-“The End,” The Doors
With all the will in the world
Diving for dear life
When we could be diving for pearls
—-“Shipbuilding,” Elvis Costello
I’ve seen the needle and the damage done
A little part of it in everyone
But every junkie’s like a setting sun
—-“Needle and the Damage Done,” Neil Young
I am just a poor boy though my story’s seldom told
I have squandered my resistance
For a pocket full of mumbles
Such are promises
All lies and jest
Still a man hears what he wants to hear
And disregards the rest
—-“The Boxer,” Paul Simon
I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
And just for that one moment
I could be you
Yes, I wish that for just one time
You could stand inside my shoes
You’d know what a drag it is
To see you
—-“Positively 4th Street,” Bob Dylan
Pailing well after sixteen days
A mammoth task was set
Sack the town
And rob the tower
And steal the alphabet
—-“Whaling Stories,” Procol Harum, (lyricist Keith Reid)
I randomly chose the Procol Harum song. It’s quite the tune (with the Edmonton Symphony Orchestra). Guitarist here is Dave Ball, not Robin Trower who had by then left the group for a solo career. Ball died just last year.
Comments welcome and always enjoy hearing your favorite lyrics.
Man, this is such a good idea for a post. Mind if I nab the idea, do the same thing and link to your post? I especially like that Neil Young one, though I think my favourite Young lyrics are in Pocahontas:
”And maybe Marlon Brando
Will be there by the fire
We’ll sit and talk of Hollywood
And the good things there for hire”
Cool post, and you’ve made me go back and listen to Whaling Stories. Cracking track 😉

Go for it. Don’t let my team of intellectual property lawyers discourage you in the least. 😀 Just kidding. Ideas are meant to be shared. I also have a previous post of great lyrics. I really should link it to this one now that I think of it. And yes, I really like Whaling Stories, especially live version. Thanks.
